Job Advice from Bill Gates
The world’s most successful college dropout Bill Gates, was recently featured by thejobnetwork. Here’s what he had to say about being successful:
- Be aware of emerging fields.
Scientists, engineers and economists are the “agents of change for all institutions.” Everyone should beef up their knowledge in these fields if one isn’t already their specialty, so they can understand or at least interact with these folks. You should also understand coding. Not necessarily be a coder but know what they do.
- Be optimistic
Behind every success story is a string of failures, even for Bill Gates. Be positive, confident and realistic and eventually you will find the success you are looking for.
- Be wary of success
The genius behind Microsoft says that a lousy teacher is the one that convinces smart people that they cannot fail. Success comes to those who work hard, persevere and take chances, even if they aren’t the brightest crayon in the box.
- Be a fighter for the greater good.
It’s hard to say if he would have said this in the 80’s but becoming a billionaire has convinced Bill Gates to do a lot of good in the world and would have others do the same. Improving the world is a great and noble cause, but hardly a requirement for success in your chosen career.
- Be open minded.
Don’t get stuck with the idea that things have to be done a certain way; they don’t. Be open to new ideas because they are what define the future.
